Borrowing
You can borrow up to 4 titles. The lending period may vary from title to title. You will need an active library card to borrow titles from this library.

Install Overdrive
Read eBooks, listen to audiobooks, and watch videos from your library on the go or at home with OverDrive Media Console. The app is available for every major desktop and mobile platform, including Windows, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android phones and tablets, Kindle, NOOK, Windows 8 PC and tablet, and Windows Phone.

Download the Overdrive Media Console app
Is your device a tablet or smartphone (iPhone or Android)? To read library eBooks, download the free Overdrive Media Console from your app store. If your device is a dedicated eReader you do not have to download anything. Visit www.digitallibrarynj.org

  • Log in (select MAIN consortium and type in your library card)
  • Search for Books (using the Search box at upper right of screen) or
  • Browse for Books (by category and genre – click on Menu icon.)

When you find a book

  • Place a Hold (if it’s not available right away. Enter your email address to be notified when it’s available) or
  • Check it Out Now (choose format: Kindle or ePub, or choose to read book online immediately.)
    • Select Kindle format if you have a Kindle eReader device. You will be asked to sign into your Amazon account during checkout, and the book will be automatically delivered to your device.
    • For any other type of device, choose the ePub format. This is the standard eBook format.
  • Create an Adobe ID Library eBooks require users to register for a free Adobe ID using your e-mail address. If you don’t already have an Adobe ID, you’ll be prompted to set one up at Adobe.com. Remember to write down your password!

Access the Book

  • For iPad or iPad Mini devices, open the Overdrive app and check “My Bookshelf.” All titles you’ve downloaded should be there.
  • For Nook Tablets, open the Overdrive app and check “My Bookshelf.” All titles you’ve downloaded should be there.
  • For Android devices (tablets and smartphones) open the Overdrive app and check “My Bookshelf.” All titles you’ve downloaded should be there.
  • For Amazon dedicated eReaders, download the Kindle format of the book, and send it directly from DigitalLibraryNJ to your eReader.
  • For the Amazon Kindle Fire, open the Overdrive app and check “My Bookshelf.” All titles you’ve downloaded should be there.
  • If you have a Nook SimpleTouch or Sony dedicated eReader, you must install Adobe Digital Editions on your computer (Windows or Macintosh). It can be downloaded at http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions.html. This is the tool that you will use to transfer the eBook to your SimpleTouch or Sony eReader. After installing Adobe Digital Editions, you will download the book to your computer and then transfer it to your device from the computer.
  • eBooks are automatically returned at the end of the loan, so you never need to worry about returning them late!

How to change your lending period:
1. 
Sign in to your account.
2.  Click the ‘Settings’ link.
3.  Select your preferred lending period for each format,
then click ‘Done.’

Returning & Renewing
Some titles can be returned before they expire. If you have not downloaded a title, you’ll be able to return it from your bookshelf. If you download a title, its ‘Return Title’ button will disappear from your bookshelf, but you may be able to return it using these steps. The option to renew a title will appear on your bookshelf within 3 days of the title’s expiration date. Learn more about how to renew titles here.

Holds
You can place up to 6 titles on hold at one time. You’ll receive an email notification when a title becomes available. Once the notice is sent, you’ll have 3 days to borrow the title. If you don’t retrieve it in time, the title will be made available to the next user on the list.

How to cancel a hold
1.  Sign in to your account.
2.  Click the ‘Holds‘ link.
3.  Click a title’s ‘Remove‘ link to remove it from your Waiting List.

How to change your holds email address
1.  Sign in to your account.
2.  Click the ‘Holds‘ link.
3.  Click a title’s ‘Edit‘ link.
4.  Enter the new email address in both required fields.
5.  Click ‘Submit‘ to update the email address for the selected title.
