What's My Line?

Question for February:  What best seller turned movie has this opening line?  'The Whistle Stop Cafe opened up last week, right next door to me at the post office, and owners Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison said business has been good ever since.'  Last Sentence:  'The End.'  Please stop by the library and fill out an answer ballot at the Circulation Desk to have your name listed on this page next month.

WHAT'S MY LINE ANSWER FOR JANUARY

Thank you to everyone who correctly answered January's What's My Line?  Opening line - 'He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff on the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.'  Answer:  Ernest Hemmingway's The Old Man and the Sea.  Correct answers were submitted by:  Karen Bartole, Maureen Burdick, Sam Cartagena, Min Chen, Kevin Chen, Carmella Germinario, Kathie Grotto, Carolyn Inga, Mary Maurer, Shalyn McCabe, Russell Schuler and Ray Whitehead.

ERIC CARLE INSPIRED PAINTINGS ON DISPLAY

Recently, local art teachers, Tracey Salvatore and Alyssa Grosso from Aaron Decker Elementary School in Butler went to a book signing of wee-known author/illustrator Eric Carle.  Mr. Carle just released his latest book called, The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse!  Both teachers were excited to bring the new book back to share with their students because the story is based on the real artist Marc Franz.  According to Mrs. Salvatore, "We love using children's literature in the art room to create a link between art and language.  Eric Carle's books are among our favorites.  We just couldn't wait to share this new story with our Kindergarteners!"  After hearing the story and being inspired by carle's beautiful collaged illustrations, the Kindergarteners worked together to paint large replicas of the animals in the story.  Miss Grosso then had a second grade class complete the paintings by addingtextural paint techniques in the style of Mr. Carle.  The colorful animals were created to be exhibited at Butler Library.  As a gift to the Butler Library, Mrs. Salvatore and Miss Grosso donated a signed copy of Eric Carle's book for all to enjoy!

THE BUTLER LIBRARY NEWSLETTER IS GOING GREEN

The Butler Public Library has been mailing a Quarterly Newsletter to all Butler residents since January 2007.  We decided to Go Green & make the Newsletter available at the library where you can pick up a copy at the Circulation Desk.  Or go to our website at www.butlerlibrary.org where you can view the Newsletter on any computer &/or print from anywhere.  There is a link on the left side of the Home Page under the link for the Community page titled Butler Library Newsletter.  There you will always be able to view the Newsletter online and print it out from any computer.  You will also be able to pick up a copy at the Circulation desk if you do not have a computer/printer.  The Newsletter contains information for a 3 month period on all of the events and programs at the Butler Public Library. The 1st Quarter 2012 Newsletter will be available for pick up at the library and on our website on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.  Future Quarterly Newsletters will be available online and at the library on April 1, July 1, and October 1.  We hope you will support us in our initiative to reduce, reuse and recycle.  We also hope you will come to the library for a copy of each Quarter’s Newsletter.

NEW EDUCATION RESOURCE

BestNursingDegree.com focuses on nursing education, listing programs from over 2,300 schools around the country.  The American Nurses Association and American Hospital Association both list it as a web resource, and the New York Times highlighted it in November 2010 as a nursing career/education resource.  Go to Resources and scroll down to Education to learn about LPN, LVN, and RN programs, from vocational schools to master's programs.

NEW IN RESOURCES

We have added in September under our Resources Page, links to Encyclopedia of Environmental Issues & Magill's Medical Guide.  Under Databases, the Encyclopedia is an easy-to-use & current reference that has assembled information from fields of knowledge such as biology, geology, anthropology, demographics, genetics, & engineering.  It explains their interrelationships in terms that are easily understood by non-specialists.  Magill's Medical Guide covers topics from A to Z:   Abdomen to Zoonoses.  It is geared for patients, caregivers, the healthy but worried population - offering straightforward, authoritative information that is more detailed & nuanced than what is generally presented in the popular press or in self-help guides.  Please take advantage of these resources using your Butler Library Card Number.
